I was thrilled when USC offered the Global Health Leadership and Management track for the MPH program and switched from Health Promotion and Education right away. I did so because I believe that the world is becoming a smaller community due to globalization and we must change and adapt in order to be relevant. I also appreciate the track and especially this class, Emerging Trends in Global Health, because I believe that it is current and dynamic and I have much to learn. I'm especially excited for the passion Dr. Shahi will bring to class given his experience in public health as well as the private sector.
As the demographic patterns continue to change, a great dichotomy emerges in the world, where we have disease from deprivation alongside disease from over-consumption. In order to achieve a balance we must work as a global community to bring about a change in the way we view health, because health is a capacity and it is the foundation for every human endeavor.
Millennium Development Goals
In order for the MDG to be achievable, a crucial prerequisite of meeting these goals for developing countries is the ability to build up their core public health functions. Policy and infrastructure must be in place and strengthened so that interventions will be managed efficiently with accountability and disseminated to those who need them most. Further, in order for these noble yet lofty goals to be achieved, governments, non-governnmental organizations, and the private sectors must work in synergy, because health and parity in health benefits everyone.

Great start to your blog, Emma. I like how you incorporated the Millenium Development Goals from the UN. What an appropriate way to preface this class and your blog! Gets my own gears inside my head turning! Thank you for posting that!
hey emma,
i like what you wrote about policy and infrastructure...very insightful. building foundations is expensive and time-consuming, but if it's not there, all the aid in the world may not solve the problem.

I really like your web blog. I like that you gave your opinions about the Millennium Development Goals, I do however feel that we are in over our heads, and because many of OECD nations have not achieved these goals, how will third world nations reach them?
Emma I really like the way you put your words together. I think you are a great writer. Having the basic public core foundation is a wonderful peak that most countries are lacking. Working together as a public health professional, in international level, will have a big effect in one’s being a long run. As I mentioned during my case study I think comparing the globalization progress in different countries is a good way to learn what might be working with the condition that we have to dealt with as professional.
At the end I think if you want to go for more schooling you should consider “LAW” school. Your personality, way of writing and MPH degree will make a great lawyer especially if you want to work with policy making! Good luck and hope to see your next blog soon! I really enjoyed reading your site :)
